2021 Success Award

The 2021 Success Award Application is available. AAUW Rapid City envisions awarding several $500 educational scholarships to young women either from west river South Dakota or attending school in western SD. Selection is based upon financial need, how the project or program furthers the applicant’s educational goals, and a clear connection between her goals and AAUW’s mission. Applications are due March 29. 2021.

About

The Rapid City Branch has been advancing equity for women and girls for nearly 100 years. The branch was chartered in 1927 with 30 dues paying members. The organizing treasurer was Miss Della M. Haft, librarian of the SD School of Mines. Since that time the branch has been actively carrying out their mission locally and supporting the national AAUW work. Following a National AAUW initiative in 1935 the Rapid Branch sponsored pre-school and kindergarten taught by a teacher trained to instruct children of that age group. In the 1960s the Rapid City branch began their used book sale which continues today. The funds raised by this event support our 1) scholarships to young women from West River SD pursuing their educational goals, and 2) grants to non-profits organizations whose mission aligns with that of AAUW. The applications for those awards are posted above. Our branch generally meets on the first or second Saturday of each month September through May. The programs are listed below. All are welcome to attend. For more information see the contact form below or email [email protected].

DSU Annual Scholarship

Activities The Madison branch participates in and sponsors a number of activities.

  • For the community, these activities include a Start Smart Salary Negotiation Workshop for DSU students, Equal Pay Day events, voter registration drives, and local election candidate forums.
  • We collaborate with others to write grants to support regional programming and opportunities for women and young girls relevant to current AAUW initiatives.
  • We contribute annually to the AAUW-DKG endowment to sponsor a DSU student scholarship.
  • We have fun. At Christmas we forgo the business meeting and have a party that includes spouses and friends of members. Each spring, the branch has a “Progressive Dinner,” with each course taking place at a different member’s home.

Branch meetings four times yearly. Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 27, at noon. The topic will be the state issues in the next election. Please call 226-0891 if you would like to join us.

Our annual Used Book Sale, is held every September. The proceeds go to our scholarship funds, which include an endowed scholarship for non-trad students at Northern State University. We are proud that in 2013 we held our 45th Book Sale!

Come join us in January and February for  a discussion on Foreign Policy issues, called Great Decisions. The group meets at lunch time and anyone is welcome to join us.

In partnership with the Aberdeen National Weather Service office and Northern State University, we support the Women in Science Conference. This is a one-day conference, held every March, to encourage young girls to enter STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers.
